As part of the measures to promote reading among children and young people, the Ministry of Education and Culture (MBK) has been working successfully with the German Publishers and Booksellers Association for years.
To continue the project “Promoting reading through picture books and first reading books – media for the lending stock of public libraries in Saarland”, the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, State Association of Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland eV, is receiving a grant of 53,000 euros this year.
Education Minister Christine Streichert-Clivot: “Reading opens doors to new worlds and infinite knowledge. For our students, it is not just a school necessity, but a way to let their imagination run wild. It is our responsibility to open up this wonderful world of reading to them and to equip them with the enthusiasm and courage they need for their future. I am grateful to the Börsenverein for implementing the special projects as part of the reading promotion. Feedback from schools shows how valuable these collaborations are. They are a success story from which the libraries in the state and the Saarland book trade benefit.”
A particular focus of the cooperation is on the development and appropriate equipment of the Saarland libraries and their cooperation with the schools and school libraries in Saarland.
Libraries supply selected media to then lend them to schools in the form of media boxes. Now daycare centers can also take part in the project’s reading events and borrow media boxes specially compiled for them, which focus on narrative picture books and non-fiction picture books and offer a broader repertoire of reading options.
