A senior Greek military official told Bild that Athens would agree to postpone promised deliveries of German marders so Ukraine would receive the combat vehicles first.
“Greece’s defense capabilities will not be affected if the Marder delivery is later,” said a military official.
The agreement on arms supplies to Ukraine stipulates that Greece will supply Ukraine with 40 BMP-1s and in return will receive the same number of German combat vehicles. Greek Defense Minister Niks Panayiotopoulos announced that Greece has already delivered more combat vehicles to Ukraine than it received in return, that is, the first 14 “Marder” combat vehicles were received from Germany and 20 “BMP- 1” were delivered to Ukraine.
After a telephone conversation between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and US President Joe Biden this week, it was announced that Germany will deliver 40 Marder machines to Ukraine, which would be enough to equip an entire battalion.
Data from the German Ministry of Defense show that the country’s army has around 370 Marders, some of which are used for training and spare parts.
About 100 more “Marders” will be delivered to Ukraine according to the agreement of the United States and the countries of the European Union.
According to Spiegel, about 60 Marder combat vehicles are currently available for delivery to Ukraine. As German officials have revealed, 40 of them are expected to be delivered in the first three months of this year. Similarly, Marder’s maker Rheinmetall can be scheduled within the next seven months.
“Marder” was the basis of the German tank grenadier divisions for more than forty years since 1970.
