Today the media collective handed over a protest letter to the Cabinet of the President of Suriname. This was received by Minister Albert Ramdin of Foreign Affairs, International Business and International Cooperation (Bibis) on behalf of the Surinamese head of state. In the letter, journalists and reporters of the collective express their dissatisfaction with, in particular, the lengthy introductions and the way of answering during the various press conferences.
According to Vishmohanie Thomas, the journalists are not on a warpath with the government, but are striving for better cooperation. They would like to see a better layout of the press conferences, a better question and answer system during the briefings and that all ministers make themselves available to answer questions from the press. We would like to see these changes reflected at the next press moment.
“The media simply wants transparency and efficiency in the flow of information from government to the media. Having the Suriname Communications Service (CDS) and the Public Communications Directorate creates a lot of uncertainty for the media when it comes to obtaining information.” It is stated that a central point of communication will be created for the government.
In the presence of Alven Roosveld and Stanley Dijksteel, Minister Ramdin reassured journalists and reporters that better cooperation opportunities will be explored.
