American basketball player Brittney Griner, who was sent to a Russian colony in August 2022 on charges of drug smuggling and returned to the US in November as a result of an exchange, has signed a contract with the Phoenix Mercury women’s club. Brittney Greiner has been with the Phoenix Mercury since 2013. She also played for UMMC Yekaterinburg from 2015 to 2022. In February 2022, a basketball player was detained at Sheremetyevo Airport after a vape with hash oil was found in her luggage.
On August 4, 2022, the Khimki Court of the Moscow Region sentenced the athlete to nine years in prison on charges of drug smuggling. On December 8, she was exchanged for Viktor Bout, a Russian convicted in the United States for arms trafficking. Following the trade, Brittney Griner stated that she intended to continue playing for the Phoenix Mercury this season.
