Medellín declares a state of total care in the face of a pandemic

Mayor Daniel Quintero declared Medellín in a state of total care on Monday, a stage that will bring economic closings and openings on specific days.

“We are entering the most dangerous stage of the virus and we have already started to execute the planned strategies when many believed that this was a simple flu,” said Quintero from the 80th Clinic, which opened with 60 ICU beds.

The new state of care implies that there will be four days of economic opening and three of total closure. In this case, the closure will begin next Friday and will last until Monday, but it will also apply throughout the Aburrá Valley.

“We have a firm commitment to isolate the coronavirus, not to give opportunities in Medellín to take our loved ones. We have made a very important decision so that throughout the Aburrá Valley, from this Friday at 00:00 and until the holiday Monday, we have a quarantine of several that will run on weekends, until we finish this first stage of ascent towards the peak, which will occur in the next 20 days and which will be the most challenging for the history of our city, “added the president.

Quintero said that in addition to the closure, the care area declared in the Center will be maintained, since a large part of infections in people over 60 years of age are concentrated there, which are those that present the greatest risk.

Medellín went on orange alert for the occupation of intensive care rooms last Sunday night. To date, and according to official reports, there are 604 ICU beds, of which 167 are occupied by patients with covid-19 and 101 with other types of patients.
