For the first time in the Latvian Cyclists’ Unit race on Sunday, prizes will also be distributed in the Latvian championship in the elite athlete group race and in the U-23 age group competition. It is expected that the maximum number allowed in three groups will start at the folk event in Sigulda – three thousand bicycle lovers.
The unit’s bike ride is a historic folk event, dating back to the 1930s, when it gathered more than five thousand participants. At that time, the patron of the competition was President Kārlis Ulmanis.

The tradition of organizing the unit’s bicycle ride was renewed in 1995. At that time, Ernests Pūce, as a representative of the Latvian Cycling Federation (LRF), paid a visit to the then President Guntis Ulmanis to convince him of the need to renew the cycling, which was so popular during the independent state and characterized the unity of the people. I managed it.
The owl admitted that during the unit’s ride he always gets on a bicycle and this time will be no exception.
The application for the Unit trip has already been completed, and the largest Latvian companies to date, which usually provide at least 100 cyclists, will also be faithful to the bike ride, said Toms Markss, a representative of the LRF federation.
The Latvian Road Cycling Championship was canceled twice due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Taking into account that the national elite men’s championships took place in almost all European countries already in the middle of August, Latvia will follow this example. Due to the technical condition of the roads, the organizers of the unit’s trip changed their intentions and the Latvian championship will take place in the 100-kilometer-long Cēsis circle.
Tomas Skujiņš, who, like last year’s national champion Krists Neilands, will take part in the multi-day competition “Tour de France” in September, will not have a chance to defend the Latvian champion title. But there will be several other strong domestic cyclists in line.
One of the main contenders for the Latvian champion’s laurels will be Emīls Liepiņš, who is in the World Tour team “Trek-Segafredo” for the first year. He hopes to win the serious competition both in the Latvian championship and then in the upcoming races in Belgium next weekend. Liepiņš admitted that it will not be easy, because the fight for the title of national champion is expected to be very serious. The winner will also receive a champion shirt in the colors of the national flag, where they will be able to participate in all international competitions throughout the year.
