The Medal of Recognition for Service during the COVID-19 Pandemic is a decoration created in 2020 by the National Union of Local Police Chiefs and Directors (Unijepol) in collaboration with the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP). Its objective is to distinguish the people and groups that made exceptional contributions in the management and mitigation of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The medal is regulated according to the Unijepol Distinctions Regulations[1] and is presented in two categories:
- Green badge: Aimed at members of the Local Police and other Security Forces and Bodies.
- Blue badge: Designed for private security workers and emergency services professionals or volunteers.
Both categories have a common design, with variations in the tape:
- Shape: Circular.
- Material: Shiny metallic.
- Love:
- Green for the green badge.
- Blue for the blue badge.
- Central design: Stylized image of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in red, blue, green and yellow colors, symbolizing unity and diversity.
- Metal bars: Engraved with the names of the granting entities, “Unijepol” and “FEMP”.
The medal has a high symbolic value, recognizing the effort and commitment of those who played essential roles during the pandemic in extraordinary conditions, contributing to security, public health and support for the community.
The decorations are awarded after an evaluation of merits by Unijepol and FEMP, and can be awarded both individually and collectively. Collective recognitions are especially notable for units or teams that have worked in coordination in emergency management.
The central SARS-CoV-2 design represents the challenge faced during the pandemic, while the colors symbolize the diversity of services that participated in the fight against the health emergency. The differentiated ribbon highlights the specificity of the service provided by each group.
This medal was conceived in the context of the 2020 global health emergency, as part of initiatives to highlight the efforts of essential workers. Since then, it has established itself as one of the most significant distinctions for those who contributed to mitigating the effects of the pandemic.
