MechWarrior 5 creator Piranha Games is developing a new title in the MechWarrior series, targeting a 2024 release. It will mainly be a single player game.
During an interview as part of a podcast episode of NoGutsNoGalaxy say Piranha Games director Russ Bullock that a new MechWarrior game is in development. This new project will not be MechWarrior Online 2 and the title can therefore not be seen as an online pvp game, but will more closely resemble the gameplay of MechWarrior 5. According to Bullock, this means that the new game will mainly follow the path of single player and co – will hit.
It is a standalone game that will be announced sometime later this year, probably in the fall. The new game will be released for PC and several unnamed consoles. Bullock later confirmed to PC Gamer that the new title is scheduled for a 2024 release.
In the interview, Bullock also said that Piranha Games would like to release a successor to MechWarrior Online, which was released in 2013, but that will be a difficult story due to licensing problems. The studio still has the rights to make MechWarrior games until 2025, but due to the uncertainty for after that, Piranha Games will not develop MechWarrior Online 2 now. According to Bullock, an extension of the license to 2030 is necessary, because five years would be required after the release of this game.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries was released on the Epic Games Store in December 2019, appeared on the Microsoft Store in May 2020, and it was Steam’s turn a year later. The game also came out in 2021 for the Xbox and PlayStation consoles and is part of the Game Pass subscription.
