Measures to eliminate the wage and pension gap are being developed

The first contacts for the elimination of the gap in salaries and pensions were made by the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Tzozi Christodoulou, who assumed duties at the Office a few days ago.

In her statements to the Cyprus News Agency, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Mrs. Christodoulou underlined that “the bet is parallel, horizontal and holistic actions and not piecemeal ones, with the aim of cultivating and consolidating a gender culture”.

In response to a question about the priorities of the Office, in order to limit phenomena of inequality due to gender, both at work and in other areas, the Commissioner he particularly referred to the contacts that have already begun with him Minister of Labourconcerning the pay and pension gap.

“One of the objectives of the governance program of the President of the Republic is to work in this direction, in close cooperation with the Minister of Labor and Social Insurance and of course with all the social partners”, he said, and added that “with the Minister of Labor we have already process and solutions to closing the gender gap in pensions, and it is a measure that we will consider towards its implementation”.

More specifically, as he said, the aim is to strengthen and upgrade the role of the competent inspectors and officials of the Labor Relations Department for the better handling of complaints, but also ex officio inspections concerning gendered work and equal pay. At the same time, as yet another priority action, he highlighted the conduct of a joint assessment concerning pay gap“always in the framework of cooperation with the social partners”.
