Only 10,000 people are welcome on Dam Square on Saturday evening. That’s about half of how many people normally attend. Anyone who wants to attend must also register online first. This year, the bags and clothing of everyone who wants to enter Dam Square will also be checked. That didn’t happen other years either.
to disturb
The mayor of Amsterdam and the police believe these measures are necessary because they are afraid that people will disrupt the commemoration. For example, because they want to protest against the war between Israel and Hamas.
Shout
A few years ago, Remembrance Day in Amsterdam was disrupted by a man who suddenly started shouting loudly. This panicked a few people and the royal family was quickly brought to safety. The man was arrested and appeared to be a bit confused. His shouting action was not intended as a protest.
