Good room ventilation is always important, but especially in times of the corona pandemic, as the virus can also be transmitted via aerosols – tiny liquid suspended particles. “But you have to ventilate properly,” says Thomas Bernd from the Viennese measurement technology specialist Kühnel Electronic. With an innovation he wants to ensure that this succeeds in every situation.
The challenge is bigger than you would think: Rooms shouldn’t be ventilated, but neither should they be too musty. If there is too much ventilation, the heat and thus the energy is outside in colder seasons. A corresponding auxiliary variable for the correct indoor air is the content, says Bernd. And this should be kept as low as possible. In schools, for example, too much is expected of children, which was also the case before Corona, says the expert. Even bedrooms with locked doors often have too high values.
Values exceeded
The maximum limit that is healthy for a person in the long term is 1,400 ppm (parts per million). In some bedrooms, values of 6,000 to 7,000 ppm are reached in the morning, says Bernd. The consequences can be tiredness, headache and poor concentration. That is why people in meetings are often unable to concentrate because limit values are often exceeded here too.
