Last night was the coldest night of 2022. In Twente the mercury dropped to -9 degrees. In the next few hours it will be even colder.
This reports Weeronline. The coldest night this year so far was November 20th. In Twente it then became -8.8 degrees.
In December it was -6.7 degrees at night. It was the night of December 11-12 in Ell, Limburg.
It’s also the coldest night of the winter season in De Bilt. At the KNMI headquarters it became -7.6 degrees (an improvement of 0.6 degrees from the previous record set in 2022).
Due to the cold, ice can form locally in large parts of the country. The KNMI then declared a yellow code for this morning. Particular attention should be paid to bridges and viaducts. There is also thick fog around some spots.
According to Weeronline, it’s rare in warm weather to get as cold as now, so early in the season. However, cold first nights have become more common in recent decades.
In the winter of 2013 it was already freezing on December 8 with a minimum temperature below -10 degrees. On 10 December 2003 it was also very cold in Twente with -10.1 degrees. In 2011 and 2017 at the beginning of the winter season it was as cold as now.
The cold nights will continue for a while. The arriving night could be locally even -9 degrees. And later the temperature will drop to -5 at night. Next week we will probably have a significant increase in temperature.
