Measure body height with the LiDAR Scanner on iPhone and iPad

Are you on a blind date and the person in question seems a lot smaller than you expected? With the LiDAR Scanner in recent iPhones and iPads you can check if it is approximately correct.

The LiDAR Scanner offers various options. For example, the iPhone can better determine depth and estimate distances. There are also all kinds of fun applications possible. This way you can determine the height of someone thanks to the Measuring app. According to Apple, this works even when someone is seated in a chair. As soon as the Measure app detects a person, it will automatically measure their height from head to toe. It’s actually really easy to do and we’ll explain it in this tip.

Measure body height: suitable iPhones and iPads

To measure someone’s height you have to iPhone of iPad have one LiDAR Scanner. This is a special sensor that can measure depth and distances. This sensor is present in the following devices:

On other devices you can also use the Measure app to measure height, including body height. But it is less accurate.

This is how height measurement works

To measure someone’s height, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the Measure app on your device.
  2. Make sure the person is in the picture from head to toe.
  3. After a short while, a line will appear above the person’s head.
  4. You will now see the body height in centimeters (metric).
  5. You can use the shutter button to take a picture of the person with the height.

On the sample photos of Apple is the length feet indicated. This depends on the chosen settings: if you are under Settings> Measure> Units of measure in front of Imperial you will get the length feet while you are at Metric just centimeters in the picture.

The LiDAR sensor is a kind of radar sensor. The lens sends out a signal and then measures how long it takes to return. The iPhone can then map the space and recognize shapes and distances, for example. One of the most fun tricks is measuring height, as we explained above. It is still an estimate; it will not be entirely accurate. For example, the shape of your haircut, wearing boots or a hat can disrupt the measurement. Therefore, try to measure several times to get a better impression. With a blind date, this may not always be possible and you will have to judge with the naked eye whether someone is really as tall as he / she claims.

Do you have an iPhone or iPad without a LiDAR sensor, you will have to indicate with dots in the Measure app where the feet and top of the head are, after which you will also receive an estimate of the height.

More possibilities of the Measuring app you can read in our separate tip!
