Measles Vaccinations Given in ’70s, ’80s May Have Worn Off, Doctors Warn
Amid the current measles outbreak in Florida, doctors are warning that if you were vaccinated for measles in the 1970s or ’80s, there’s a chance the protection has worn off by now. The measles vaccine was first introduced in 1968, followed by the MMR vaccine in 1971, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella.
Legacy Vaccines May Become Less Effective Over Time
With the ongoing outbreak in Florida, USF College of Public Health associate professor Jill Roberts has spoken out about the potential decrease in effectiveness of legacy vaccines. For those individuals who received measles vaccinations in the ’70s and ’80s, mainly people in their 40s and 50s, Roberts strongly recommends checking with a healthcare provider to ensure their vaccination status.
Measles Elimination and Overwhelming Transmission
Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, a couple of decades after the introduction of the MMR vaccine. However, for those who have not been previously infected or vaccinated, the virus remains highly contagious, with a transmission likelihood of up to 90%. It is, therefore, crucial for individuals to stay vigilant.
Importance of Measles Vaccinations and Immunity Level
Dr. Jacob Glanville, a virology expert and founder of Centivax, warns about recent outbreaks stemming from under-vaccinated communities. While having received the MMR vaccine generally ensures immunity, Dr. Glanville advises individuals who have concerns to speak with their doctors regarding a measles titer test to assess their immunity levels.
Measles Titer Testing as a Precautionary Measure
Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center and a Fox News medical contributor, highlights the importance of measles vaccinations, particularly with the current surge in global measles cases. He even recommends considering boosters as a precautionary measure if a titer test indicates low immunity levels.

As of the latest report, a total of 41 measles cases have been reported by 16 U.S. jurisdictions, which include Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York City, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.
