Measles Vaccination Urgency: Almost 100 Cases in Covasna County

The president of the Covasna Family Physicians Association, Dr. Lucia Sereș, says that there is a reluctance on the part of parents regarding the anti-measles vaccination of children, given that almost 100 cases of measles have been registered in the county since the beginning of this year Covasna. The doctor emphasizes that the disease is extremely serious and can have serious complications, and the only way to prevent it is vaccination.

“Measles is a very, very contagious disease, patients and parents must understand that it is no joke. Some say: Well, we also made the childhood disease, what if the child does? It’s not like that! Measles is a very serious disease, you don’t get away with just a few bumps, you get a very high fever and complications can occur. In addition to the fact that the patient coughs during the disease, very serious complications can occur that lead to death: pneumonia, laryngitis, encephalitis which is the inflammation of the brain, and very serious is panencephalitis which occurs after a few years if the virus remains in the body and attacks the whole body , but primarily the brain, and in a few months the patient dies on his feet. It’s no joke! It’s not a common childhood disease that pass and that’s it (…) Adults can also get measles, they can get bronchitis, pneumonia, encephalitis, and the disease weakens the body in such a way that any other disease can appear against the background of measles. Adults, most of them are vaccinated, because there were no such fads before I do not want!, but especially children, who are the source of the disease, must be protected. This is why the vaccine was invented. For decades – since the 70s, the measles vaccine has been used, so it is a vaccine that has passed all the controls, stood the test of time, it is safe and the world must get vaccinated!”, said the doctor in an interview at We Radio (VIDEO HERE).

“We have enough vaccine. All parents should go, even if they were not notified, because now they are also called by SMS, but if the child is 9 months old, then they should go with him to the family doctor, get interested and show up for vaccination, for that it is very, very important”, emphasized the representative of the Department of Surveillance and Control of Communicable Diseases, Igyártó Gabriella.

According to experts, the first dose of MMR vaccine, given at 12 months of age, provides 95% protection against measles, and the second dose, given between 5 and 7 years of age, provides 99.7% protection against measles.

The measles epidemic is present in 35 counties and in Bucharest. The most illnesses were registered in the counties of Braşov – 795, Mureş – 776 and Cluj – 204, and 470 cases were registered in the capital.

The number of measles cases is also increasing alarmingly in Covasna county, with 57 cases recorded in the last week alone, and the number of infections since the beginning of the year to date is approaching 100, according to the Public Health Directorate (DSP) Covasna. Almost 60% of the cases come from Hetea, a locality where the vaccination rate is extremely low, despite repeated attempts by doctors to convince people to immunize their children.

Specialists draw attention to the fact that the disease is extremely contagious and patients can have serious complications that can even lead to death. At the national level, between January 1 and 14, 2024, the number of confirmed measles cases reached 3,353, according to data from the National Institute of Public Health. Since the beginning of the epidemic, four deaths have been recorded, the most recent being a one-year-old child from Giurgiu.
