Measles: strike from the shadow of the coronavirus

In the shadow of the coronavirus the planet is threatened by measles… The doctors sounded the alarm last year: then, according to WHO, 870 thousand people fell ill with measles, the highest rate in almost a quarter century. And the death rate has increased by 50% over the past 4 years. Outbreaks of a disease more contagious than Covid-19 have been reported in both developing and developed countries.

Natasha Crowcroft, World Health Organization:

“You may feel safe, but you are not. To control measles, you need to have an excellent vaccination system, and if not, then measles will sooner or later make itself felt. There are more and more unvaccinated children in the world; it is like dry trees in the forest: fuel accumulates, and at a certain moment it breaks out, an epidemic begins. “

This, according to the organization, was led, among other things, by the “anti-vaccine” movement. While the vast majority of children were vaccinated, isolated cases of refusal did not affect the situation. Measles has been “forgotten,” and healthcare facilities have become less serious about the accumulation and storage of vaccines.

And against the backdrop of a pandemic, vaccination in many cases has completely stopped. According to doctors, this is completely unjustified.

Alexey Rykov, pediatrician:

“It is impossible and not necessary to stop vaccination during a pandemic, it does not affect the vaccination of children and adults in any way. And moreover, we see that the decrease in the level of vaccination due to the pandemic has led to the fact that we can get outbreaks of other infectious diseases, not only coronavirus “.

According to the WHO, in order for measles not to declare itself, at least 95% of the population must be vaccinated. Now this figure is less than 85%.

International travel bans have slowed the spread of the disease somewhat. However, according to representatives of the WHO, the true picture is now impossible: medical laboratories around the world have almost completely switched to covid, and do not track measles cases as closely as they used to.
