MEASLES CAN BE PREVENTED! Vaccinate your child against measles (measles)
PRESS RELEASE – DSP Neamt: Given that since the beginning of the year, in Romania, 573 confirmed cases of measles have been notified, 463 of which are non-vaccinated persons and 63 are persons ineligible for the ROR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccination, and the vaccination coverage for both doses of ROR are continuously decreasing we bring to your attention that moThe most effective way to prevent measles in children is the measles vaccination, which protects and eliminates the risk of severe forms of the disease, complications or death.
Vaccination for children is free and is carried out in family doctors’ offices.
In 2023, in Neamț county, no case of measles was confirmed.
Measles (measles) is a highly contagious infectious disease, sometimes with severe evolution, caused by the measles virus. It mainly affects children between the ages of 1 and 3, who are not vaccinated and who are no longer protected by their mother’s antibodies.
The disease is more serious in the case of infants and small children, where it causes complications and quite high mortality.
How the measles virus is transmitted
The sources of infection are only the sick person. There are no healthy carriers of the virus.
The patient is contagious five days before and five days after the appearance of the rash.
The transmission of the virus is done:
direct by contact with the sick person through drops of nasopharyngeal secretion and
conjunctival secretions spread in the air around the patient; they remain in suspension in the air, being contagious up to 2 hours after the patient has left the room or other closed space;
indirect through objects contaminated with secretions from the patient, a less common method.
The measles virus is easily transmitted, with the disease being 90% contagious.
What are the symptoms of the disease?
Symptoms usually appear at 10-12 days after contact with the virus.
At first, the child seems “cold” with fever, sneezing, conjunctivitis (watery eyes, red conjunctivae). Appear the Koplik sign characteristic of the disease (on the mucous membrane of the cheeks, near the molars, small white dots appear, similar to semolina grains).
As the disease progresses, especially between the 3rd and 7th day after the onset, the rash appears, first on the face and neck, a rash that generalizes, in 3 days, on the trunk and limbs.
The eruption consists of congestive macules (spots) that disappear on pressure, pink in color, at first small then larger with jagged edges. The spots that are slightly raised and soft to the touch usually merge, leaving portions of healthy skin. After 2-3 days, the eruptive elements turn pale and disappear in the order in which they appeared, leaving behind them yellow-brown spots, which gently peel off.
The patient may present digestive disorders with vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and andmptome NERVE which consist of: indisposition, irritability, headaches, with serious general condition especially in adults.
At the first signs of illness, presentation to the family doctor/pediatrician/infectious disease specialist is mandatory!
What are the complications of measles
Complications occur especially in young children, the most exposed being malnourished children, with vitamin A deficiencies, those whose immune system is affected (AIDS, leukemia).
Measles greatly reduces the body’s defense capacity, so that superimposed microbial infections can take over severe forms:
encephalitis in 1/1000 cases; pneumonia; bronchopneumonia leading to death in 1/1000 cases; ear infections; severe diarrhea with secondary dehydration.
How do we prevent illness?
The most effective way to prevent measles is the measles vaccination.
Measles vaccination protects and eliminates the risk of severe forms of the disease, complications or death.
Two doses of measles vaccine protect almost 100% against the disease and its potentially severe complications
The MMR vaccine protects the child from three diseases: measles, mumps and rubella. The first dose of MMR vaccine is given at the age of 1 year, and the second dose at the age of 5 years.
In some cases, mild adverse reactions such as fever or slight redness and swelling of the place where the vaccine was given may occur.
VACCINATION IS ONE OF THE SAFEST MEDICAL INTERVENTIONS.
PARENTS, PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN BY VACCINATION!
