During January 2024, Suceava county was affected by a significant increase in measles cases, registering a total of 8 cases in several localities in the area.
According to the information provided by the Suceava County Public Health Directorate, the situation of measles cases is as follows:
1 case in Marginea commune;
2 cases in Dolhești commune;
1 case in Voitinel commune;
1 case in Iacobeni commune;
3 cases in Rădăuți municipality.
Of the total confirmed cases, 6 cases were registered in unvaccinated children, aged between 8 months and 11 years, while one case was identified in a 3-year-old child, vaccinated only with the first dose of measles vaccine.
As early as December 2023, the Suceava County Public Health Directorate implemented an action plan aimed at limiting the spread of the measles epidemic. Measures include constant communication with family doctors, medical staff in educational institutions and health facilities, as well as the community healthcare network. These actions aim at the surveillance of cases, the collection of biological samples, the reporting of data according to the health legislation in force and the application of the necessary preventive measures.
The Directorate of Public Health reminds that vaccination is the most effective method of prevention against measles. The MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine is indicated from the age of 12 months, with the possibility of administration to infants from the age of nine months in special circumstances, such as epidemics. A second dose can be given at least four weeks after the first dose.
In the current epidemiological context, the authorities encourage parents to request vaccination of children according to the national vaccination calendar, thus ensuring the protection of their health. MMR vaccination is included in the National Vaccination Program of the Ministry of Health and is free.
DSP Suceava shows that the specific activities imposed by the epidemiological situation will continue in the next period.
