Measles Outbreak in Ethiopia: Surge in Confirmed Cases Since 2021

Since 2021, the annual number of confirmed cases of measles in Ethiopia has increased significantly, from 1,953 in 2021 to 9,291 (an increase of 376%) in 2022, and 6,933 so far in 2023, as of May 1. Thus, there was a nearly five-fold increase in confirmed measles cases between 2021 and 2022.

Between January 1 and April 2, 2023, the somali region reported 56 laboratory-confirmed and 364 epidemiologically linked measles cases.

From August 12, 2021 to May 1, 2023, 16,814 laboratory-confirmed measles cases and 182 deaths were reported nationally, with a case fatality rate of 1.1%.

Active outbreaks of measles have been reported in 44 woredas/districts from eight regions: Afar, Amhara, Harari, Oromia, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR), South West Ethiopia Peoples Region (SWEPR), Tigray and Somali. The number of woredas affected by measles was 52 (5% of the country’s 1,080 woredas) in 2021 and 125 (12%) in 2022

Among confirmed measles cases, only 36% have received one or more doses of the vaccine
