Measles Outbreak in Astrakhan Region: 80 Cases and the Importance of Vaccination

As of July 14, 80 cases of measles have been registered in the Astrakhan region. 60 patients are children.

According to Rospotrebnadzor, 74 patients did not have vaccinations. Most of the unvaccinated patients were vaccinated. Three people had a medical lead. Among the sick were children who had not reached the vaccination age – 6 people.

The incidence was recorded in Astrakhan, Narimanov, Ikryaninsky, Privolzhsky, Volodarsky, Kamyzyaksky, Limansky districts.

Measles is an acute infectious disease. The most serious complications include blindness, encephalitis, severe diarrhea and associated dehydration, inflammation of the middle ear (possibly spreading to the inner ear), and severe respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia. Unvaccinated young children and unvaccinated pregnant women are at high risk of measles and complications, including death.

The most effective measure to prevent and control measles is immunization.
