CHICAGO – Measles vaccination efforts are intensifying among several local and federal agencies after two new cases were recorded at the migrant shelter in Pilsen.
On Tuesday morning there was a meeting at the shelter with staff from Councilman Byron Sigcho López’s office along with staff from the Chicago Public Health and Family and Support Services departments. In this meeting they would be discussing the plan and logistics once CDC personnel join in response to the measles outbreak in this shelter to prevent or stop the spread of the virus.
Currently, the total number of infections in the city of Chicago is five people, including one case that is not related to the shelter.
Of the positive cases reported at this shelter, two are adults and the other two are children.
Vaccination efforts began over the weekend and have provided the MMR measles vaccine to more than 900 newly arrived migrants to date.
At the same time, the Cook County Health Department is notifying patients and visitors who were possibly exposed to people who tested positive for measles.
Those who were at Stroger Hospital on February 27 between noon and 11:58 pm should contact Chicago Public Health at 312-743-7216.
And those who were at Arlington Heights Medical Center on March 7 between 11 am and 3:30 pm should contact the Cook County Health Department at 708-836-8600.
