The Directorate of Public Health announces the fact that, in the last week, within Neamț County, 17 more cases of measles were confirmed, in 16 children and one adult, from the localities of Roman and Târgu Neamț. Two outbreaks of measles were detected and investigated, in a school in Roman and in the Pediatric Department of the Municipal Emergency Hospital in Roman, 7 people being infected with the measles virus.
DSP representatives communicate the fact that since the declaration by the Ministry of Health of the measles epidemic, 23 cases of measles have been confirmed in Neamt, in children and adults aged between 5 months and 32 years. For each case, according to the methodology, the epidemiological investigation was carried out to detect direct contacts and the family doctor was notified, in order to apply anti-epidemic measures.
The DSP draws attention to the fact that it is very important that during the relationship with the doctors conducting the epidemiological investigation, all the requested information regarding contacts, whether or not the patient declared sick is vaccinated or any other relevant information regarding direct contacts, is communicated. If a family member has come into contact with a person sick with measles, he or she must notify the family doctor immediately.
Measles (measles) is an extremely contagious viral disease, with a contagion rate of over 95%, caused by the measles virus, the condition manifesting itself through fever, rash, frequent and severe complications. Thus, measles can cause respiratory infections, seizures, ear infections, brain inflammation and brain damage. Measles can be very serious and can cause hearing loss, vision loss and even death.
It is an extremely dangerous disease for children under 1 year old, for pregnant women and for people with low immunity. Protection against the disease is done only by immunization with the MMR vaccine, which is given at the age of 12 months and a second dose at the age of 5 years. The MMR vaccine is administered, free of charge, in the family doctor’s office, to all children, with or without a birth certificate.
Starting from December 2023, when the Ministry of Health declared a measles epidemic, the institution took a preventive measure, administering an additional dose of ROR vaccine for children between the ages of 9 and 11 months. Epidemiologists assure that the MMR vaccine is safe and effective and has very few side effects.
