Paying an entire shopping cart with meal vouchers, even if it contains non-food products, will soon no longer be possible in the supermarkets. According to the law, only food products can be used for payment, but many supermarkets did not strictly apply this. Now that there are no longer paper checks, but only electronic checks, it becomes easier to distinguish between products, says the umbrella of check issuers VIA.
Supermarket chain Carrefour has not accepted meal vouchers for non-food products since last year, Delhaize and Colruyt have now also adapted their checkout systems and will only accept meal vouchers for food products from September. Until now, there was in principle (here and there) a manual check, but in practice many non-food products also passed.
Wim Van Edom of the trade federation Comeos confirms the change of course: “VIA (the umbrella organization of meal voucher issuers) has decided to monitor correct compliance more strictly. It is not an obvious matter to do this 100 percent correctly, so there is a timeline. agreed to adjust the cash register systems.
