Jakarta –
It’s been 100 days since Hollywood was rocked by demonstrations by a movement initiated by writers, actors, and now visual effects (VFX) activists. This has also forced several major studio houses to postpone the screening of their films to next year and change the entire timeline.
Of course, this decision has a big impact on countries that are their big market, such as Indonesia and makes Hollywood film schedule slots in cinemas more flexible. This incident is of course a concern for filmmakers, especially Indonesian producers, such as Manoj Punjabi who is the boss of MD Entertainment.
As a connoisseur of films, Manoj admits that he is sad because the circulation of Hollywood films in theaters has decreased. But as a businessman, of course this is an opportunity that must be optimized.

“For me personally, there are no (Hollywood) films, but in terms of business this is a big opportunity. But that doesn’t mean that (Hollywood) films are stopped, but postponed. For example, there are 20 films but only 10 of them end up. Yes, the problem for other people could be opportunity for us,” he explained when met at his office at MD Place, South Jakarta.

So have he and his team at MD prepared a plan to deal with this phenomenon?
“What is certain is that our plans for September are clear, August 17, The Boy’s Note, September 21, The Story of the Land of Java, we have several films that have been filmed, such as Risa Journal, Do You See What I See, and three titles that have not been announced. Yes, four films that’s for sure, so we are incessant where the date that Hollywood previously filled but he stepped aside (posted the broadcast schedule) we filled in,” said the producer of The Boy’s Notes.
Apart from that, Manoj Punjabi also discussed the situation of the film industry in the country, which is still far from ideal. For him, there is great potential that should be achieved considering the very large population of Indonesia.
He also slightly compared with the situation in Malaysia which can get 5 to 6 million viewers, even though the population is only 33 million people.
“It’s still a long way off, for me, Indonesian films should get 20 to 25 million (viewers) per film. But this isn’t yet, the potential has to go there. The target of 15 million is not impossible (for now). Not yet (the development), it can still be It’s being raised again because of our (large) population. In Malaysia, the most spectators are 5-6 million viewers, that’s 33 million people. We are 270 million people, but there are only 10 million, so at least 20 million is only natural,” he concluded.
Until now, the highest-grossing film in Indonesia is still held by KKN in Penari Village with a total of 10 million viewers since it was screened in theaters on April 30, 2022.
