The city of skyscrapers is not only known for its hot dog stands and popular fast food joints. You can also find pubs with a lot of history. The most notable of these is McSorley’s Old Ale House, the oldest Irish pub in New York. It has been open since 1854 at 15 East 7th Street in midtown Manhattan.

With slogans such as ‘Be Good or Be Gone’, this brewery has been making a name for itself since the 19th century. Famous patrons such as Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt were regulars at McSorley’s Old Ale House. Another controversial pub slogan was not repealed until well into the 20th century: “Good Ale, Raw Onions and No Ladies”. In fact, until 1970 women were not allowed to enter the pub.

Today the pub is much more tolerant and everyone is welcome in one of the oldest and most traditional places in the city that never sleeps. In fact, several trade magazines have included the pub in their top 5 historic bars in New York.
