On Friday, McLaren Racing boss Zak Brown spoke again about Red Bull‘s controversial decision to use the T-Tray to change the ride height from the cockpit. The team agreed with the FIA to make changes to avoid suspicion, but due to the tight schedule this will only be possible in two weeks in Sao Paulo.
Zac Brown: “I don’t think they had a choice. There are so-called open source components, where every team can see what their opponents are doing. You submit the blueprints to the FIA and all teams will have access to them if it is an open source component.
They couldn’t deny the ability to access a front belly change from the cockpit. It was undeniable, they just had no choice but to say: “Yes, we can.”
We have no such opportunity. This is not provided by McLaren, as well as eight other teams. Why design this device for use inside the car when nine other teams use it outside?
Innovation is part of Formula 1, but there are black and white rules that cannot be completely broken. You cannot touch your car in park except for the comfort of the driver. Red Bull chose their words carefully, saying the system cannot be used “when the car is fully assembled.” But it cannot be fully assembled when the team is working on rider comfort.
Why does the FIA think it is necessary to put a seal if the solution is not used. Why fill then?
I believe that a detailed investigation should be carried out in this case, because if you do something in a closed park that affects the efficiency of the car, this is a black and white violation that could seriously to have an effect.
Transparency is very important in this day and age, but I still have questions. From conversations with other team leaders, I know they have questions. I would like to know the answer.”
