Usually it’s not such a good idea to do something illegal and then post it on YouTube. The police are also watching. But that didn’t stop the driver of a McLaren 720S from uploading a 22-minute video of him committing one traffic violation after another. All to break a record from 2013.

Records are there to be broken. That’s why almost every year a bunch of crazy people are ready to take on the Cannonball Run challenge. The unofficial race across the United States runs from New York on the east coast to Redondo Beach (near Los Angeles) on the west coast. The current record is held by Arne Torman, Doug Tabbutt and Dunadel Daryoush, who took just 25 hours 39 minutes in a heavily modified Audi S6 to complete the 4,677-kilometer route. Their average speed was 180 km/h. That while, added together, they also stood still for 31 minutes to refuel.
Creator of first record video arrested by police
In 2013, a new ‘race’ appeared on the internet: the Manhattan circle. Adam Tang – nicknamed Afroduck – set a start time of 24 minutes in his standard BMW Z4. Tang was arrested, convicted of reckless driving and eventually fled to Canada. That didn’t deter a YouTuber by the name of JTThornton. During the corona crisis, he used the lockdown to make the Manhattan tour even sharper. In June 2020 he set a best time of 21 minutes and 3 seconds with a McLaren 720S. His average speed was 111 km/h.
McLaren 720S driver stops neatly in front of red traffic lights
It could have been faster, because the video shows that the driver stops neatly at red lights and now and then goes off the gas because other road users are sitting in front of him. He also encounters a few police cars and has to keep up with the speed. As soon as the blue flashing lights are out of sight, the gas can be turned on again. We wonder if the NYPD will do anything about this. When Adam Tang posted his record ride on the internet in 2013, the men in blue were at his door in no time.
