By beating TSG Hoffenheim, Schalke prevented the club from breaking Tasmania Berlin’s negative record. With Weston McKennie and Mesut Özil, two ex-Schalke players celebrated with the royal blues – and the Berliners also spoke up.

The relieved sigh of relief was when you listened carefully, to hear all over Germany – at least when you have an ear for the suffering of the fans of Schalke 04. The Royal Blues won the game against TSG Hoffenheim 4-0 and prevented not only the 31st game in a row without a win, but also the setting of the negative record by Tasmania Berlin from the 1960s. What a shame that would have been for the already troubled Schalke players.

Weston McKennie was someone who celebrated the win with great passion. The Schalke professional, who is currently on loan to Juventus Turin, posted a video on Instagram in which he cheers and sings. “Let’s go guys,” yells the 22-year-old into the camera. And someone else spoke up: Mesut Özil, a real Schalke boy and native of Gelsenkrichen, wrote on Twitter: “Brother! Ladies and Gentlemen – The Kolasinac Effect – Maschiiiine!”.

Sead Kolasniac, the “machine”

In the post in English, 32-year-old Özil described his former teammate Kolasinac, with whom he had played at Arsenal, as a “machine”. When Schalke won, Kolasinac, on loan from the Londoners, celebrated his Bundesliga comeback after three and a half years. Matthew Hoppe (42nd, 57th and 63rd minutes) and Amine Harit (80th) met for Schalke.
