McKayla Maroney, who won Olympic gold in 2012, said this week that she has struggled with “severe insomnia”
– Hopefully you had a hot summer, because I definitely didn’t. I had a summer with severe insomnia, she shared Instagram for his followers.
To illustrate how bad it was, she gives an example:
– I slept a total of ten nights in three months. I would like to say it was a nightmare, but you have to sleep to have nightmares, she expresses.
In one of the videos Maroney has shared, she cries in despair because she hasn’t slept a second all night.
She has also shared several photos from the treatment and medical tests she underwent, as she saw a number of doctors to find out what was causing her ailments.
Breakthrough
The ex-tournament is now said to have finally overcome the problem.
– Fortunately, I finally found out that I have histamine intolerance, which caused a massive adrenaline problem for me. When it got really bad was when I had eaten food with a lot of histamine. It made me itch intensely, as if I had been bitten by mosquitoes all night, she writes.
Maroney has now received the supplements she needs and is now able to sleep almost normally. But she is not completely rid of the problems with sleep, she admits.
She hopes that her openness about insomnia can help others seek the right help.
From gold to bad things
Maroney won team gold for the United States at the 2012 London Olympics, and took silver individually. She also has WC gold and several other international medals.
She was also one of hundreds of gymnasts who accused Dr. Larry Nassar, doctor for the US national gymnastics team, of sexual abuse over a number of years. A crime he was convicted of in 2018.

In court, she revealed a number of gruesome details.
– I lay naked and cried on the bed with him on top of me. I thought I was going to die, and then it got worse, she said of one of the assaults.
