“The beef for the hamburgers is top notch.”
The editors of Webcafe.bg sought the Bulgarian branch of McDonald’s for a comment by email, indicating the sources from which the reviews were taken, but we did not receive one.
This is what a McDonald’s employee wrote on Reddit.
He does not convince us that it is particularly useful to eat in this particular chain, but at least he debunks the myth that the burgers between the two toasted buns are made of anything.
On the other hand, the user in question, as well as a bunch of his colleagues, share on the forums what they would never eat.
The people who take your order with a smile and listen to your preferences know best what will be on the tray when it arrives in front of you. Sometimes the food is OK — that includes fries, Big Macs, and seasonal offerings such as burgers.
However, other menu offerings are so awful that no one who works at McDonald’s would even think to taste them, even if they were completely free.
Here are a few of these foods that are often mentioned in internet forums:
Chicken nuggets
Over the years, the ingredients of chicken nuggets have changed and improved, but not the way employees treat them.
One of them admitted on Reddit that there are cases where the chicken nuggets spend half a day being fried before being sold. At a certain period of time, the bites are only warmed up so that they are not handed to the customer cold.
There is an option to request freshly fried bites, but there is no guarantee that your request will be granted.
That’s why almost no one working in the chain eats chicken nuggets – to be sure they won’t be consuming something that was prepared hours ago.
Filet-O-Fish
Exactly the same is the case with McDonald’s fish burgers, as another Reddit user recounts.
He explains that, at the behest of managers, the fish burgers for Filet-O-Fish are made around 11 a.m., just before lunch time. A huge amount of breaded fish burgers are fried, sandwiches are assembled and packaged.
At lunch they taste nice and fresh, but with each passing hour they become more and more unappetizing. The same user is adamant that they rarely make fresh Filet-O-Fish during the day, so stay away from them.
Anything with onions!
If you want something missing from your burger – cucumbers, ketchup, onions, the employees are obliged to prepare the sandwich according to your requirements.
The workers, for their part, urge you not to eat anything from McDonald’s that contains onions. Those little white bits arrive in the form of dehydrated onions packed in huge sacks.
Before placing in the sandwich, the onion is briefly soaked in water to make it more appetizing. But that’s not all.
At some chain restaurants, the onion isn’t even “real” but onion powder that’s formed into these little cubes. It’s not poisonous, but it’s certainly not particularly tasty.
Apple pie
It comes with a warning to be careful because it is hot. It’s hot because it’s freshly baked. The thing is, you can never be sure exactly how many times the pie has been baked.
This recognition comes from Quorra, where a former worker says that a certain amount of apple pies are made, but some of them do not sell out immediately. Thus, the desserts cool down and when someone orders them, they are baked again.
This way, the customer can get a pie that has been baked countless times to deliver it warm.
Another option to keep the pies warm is to leave them on a rack above the fryers. The steam from the hot oil keeps it hot, but the dough soaks up the fat and soaks it up like a sponge.
Ice cream
If the ice cream maker isn’t working, that’s good news.
McDonald’s ice cream machines are being cleaned far more often than necessary. Evidence of this comes from a 2017 story in the Independent showing pipes full of dirt.
According to the worker who shared the photos, it is part of the ice cream machine. The same employee was fired after his revelations, only to have his words corroborated by his colleagues around the world.
At best, the machines are cleaned once a week, which is still not enough. At worst, months pass before anyone notices the ice cream machines.
Cold tea
The iced tea at McDonald’s contains a criminal amount of sugar and it shows even on the ingredient label.
It says that there are about 90 calories in iced tea, but on the other hand, there are 21 grams of sugar per cup. According to former employees of McDonald’s, there is a minimum of 400 grams of sugar in one pack of iced tea.
That is why no one familiar with the composition of the drink drinks it.
