McDonald’s installed 20 bird houses, which are placed in trees that surround the restaurants and function as homes, providing a refuge for birds so that they have a safer space for their young and thus contributing to the conservation of avian species. .
These houses can be found in different restaurants such as McDonald’s No. 100 in Calzada Roosevelt and Pradera Zacapa. Also in Vista Hermosa, Lourdes, Delta Bárcenas, Liberación, Álamos, Zapote, Ciudad Real, among others.
Birdhouses have been carefully designed to provide a comfortable and welcoming environment for birds. They are made from Chilean pine, with a focus on durability and resource conservation. In addition, they were strategically placed in natural areas and in urban settings, where a greater need for artificial bird habitats has been identified. Some of the species that have been observed the most are: pigeons, small woodpeckers, sparrows, among others.
McDonald’s invites the community and nature lovers to join this initiative. Likewise, it urges other companies and entities to join this collective effort to protect and conserve avian species and the environment in general.
More initiatives for a greener planet
For McDonald’s it is important to continue carrying out small actions that generate big changes, which is why it implements programs that benefit everyone and the planet. For several years, it has been implementing actions in favor of the environment such as LED lighting in its restaurants, efficient air conditioning equipment, a cold room system that reuses energy to heat water, and recycling programs. McDonald’s restaurants in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras use renewable energy, which is equivalent to planting 420,000 trees.
McDonald’s has stopped using 70 million straws in its restaurants over the last 4 years, reducing the use of plastic. It has managed to recycle more than 60,000 gallons of oil to turn it into biodiesel. McCafé napkins, drink holders, paper bags, and sundae and cold drink cups come from recycled sources.
Additionally, the cardboard is recycled and used to make various products such as kraft paper bags, egg cartons, etc. Through this initiative, the company has managed to recycle approximately 600 tons of cardboard in the Mesoamerica region. The cardboard packaging is FSC certified, which guarantees that it comes from renewable sources, as is the coffee that is Rainforest certified.
These initiatives are just one example of McDonald’s ongoing commitment to the environment, which is why it will continue to implement actions and projects that promote more sustainable solutions in all aspects of its operations.
