(CNN) A jury in Broward County, Fla., has awarded McDonald’s $800,000 in a lawsuit seeking damages for a toddler who was burned by McDonald’s chicken nuggets. A verdict was handed down ordering the company to pay damages of 10 million yen.
According to CNN affiliate WPLG, the problem was a chicken nugget sold at a drive-thru at a franchise store in Tamarack, Fla. A jury in May found McDonald’s and its franchisees responsible for failing to provide proper care and handling instructions about the potential for burns from hot chicken nuggets.
The jury, in its 19th ruling, ordered the plaintiffs to pay a total of $800,000 in compensation for the pain, scars, emotional distress, and loss of freedom and enjoyment they had suffered. Of this amount, $400,000 will be compensation for past injuries, and $400,000 will be compensation for future damages.
The plaintiff’s attorneys said in a statement, “The defendant was previously held accountable for his mistakes, and the verdict confirms that the defendant must bear full responsibility for the consequences.”
CNN has reached out to McDonald’s for comment.
