McDonald’s Opens First Green Restaurant with Zero Electricity in the US

Solar panels are installed on the roof of the building, and natural ventilation works more than half of the days a year.

In Florida, USA, the world’s first McDonald’s restaurant, which is completely powered by renewable energy sources, opens. writes designboom.

The building was designed by the Chicago bureau Ross Barney Architects. The total area of the restaurant is 8,024 square feet (745 m2), on which located kitchen, auto cafe, dining area, order pick-up area, covered terrace and others.

The V-shaped roof is covered with solar panels, which are estimated to generate 704,700 kWh per year. Photovoltaic glass panels are also installed throughout the building, clarifies Architectural Record.

Natural ventilation works in the restaurant 65% of the days a year. When you need to turn on the air conditioner, automatic blinds are triggered (they react to humidity and air temperature sensors), designboom notes.

Outside, the walls of the building are covered with living plants (the area of the vertical “flower bed” is over 1700 square feet, or 158 m²). They purify air and retain water, the newspaper explains.

Solar energy also powers the lights installed in the parking lot. Their autonomous power supply system allows the restaurant to save 8,000 kWh per year, the newspaper points out.

McDonald’s says the new restaurant will serve as a learning center for the company to test new solutions to reduce water and energy costs. In 2021, the network plans to undergo international certification of “zero energy consumption”, and by 2030 – to reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions by 36%, the publication points out.
