McDonald’s: One dead from bacteria in a burger –

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sounded the alarm after the E.coli bacterium was found in hamburgers at McDonald’s and caused the death of an elderly person in Colorado.

At least 49 people were sickened in 10 states, ten of whom were hospitalized, including a child who suffered from hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious complication that can develop from an E.coli infection, CNN reported.

According to the CDC, most of the people who got sick reported eating McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers. The investigation continues apace, and as reported by the US Food and Drug Administration, chopped onions are the likely source of contamination.

Both the onions and the ground beef were recalled from McDonald’s stores in Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming and parts of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma .

What causes E.coli

McDonald’s said in a statement that the initial findings of the investigation linked the onions to “a single supplier serving three distribution centers.”

The bacterium E.coli causes stomach cramps, sudden onset of watery diarrhea, often bloody, vomiting and fever, which is however not very high, symptoms lasting three to four days. Those infected usually recover without treatment, but some may develop complications and even die.
