McDonald’s Middle East Chaos: Hamas & Israel War and Rejected Donations

Jakarta

Fast food restaurant chain from the United States (US) McDonald’s in the Middle East there is chaos because of the Hamas & Israel war. Quoted from Al Jazeera, Friday (20/10/2023), McDonald’s franchises in Muslim countries rejected McDonald’s Israel’s action of providing free food to their country’s military.

McDonald’s in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Egypt, Bahrain and Turkey have distanced themselves from their Israeli counterparts. They even prepared a donation of US$ 3 million or around Rp. 47.40 billion for Palestinians who were bombarded in Gaza.

“Let’s all combine our efforts and support the people of Gaza with everything we can,” wrote McDonald’s Oman on X (formerly Twitter), while pledging US$ 100,000 in humanitarian aid for Gaza.

Since announcing its support for the Israeli army, McDonald’s Israel has changed its Instagram account settings to ‘private’. This was done following strong reactions from consumers in Arab and Muslim countries.

Although McDonald’s is one of America’s most iconic brands, the majority of its restaurants are locally owned and operated. Meanwhile, McDonald’s head office in Chicago, United States did not respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment.

The McDonald’s case highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics that global brands must grapple with. In the current era, the business world is expected to be able to consider social and political issues in making decisions.
