McDonald’s sued by burnt customer
Hundreds of thousands of dollars in compensation for lawsuits filed by McNugget and others
McDonald’s, a global franchise, is suffering from a hot food problem. This is because the company regularly compensates hundreds of thousands of dollars to customers who get burned while eating food.
On the 21st (local time), CNN reported that a McDonald’s chain in San Francisco was sued by a customer who suffered burns from hot coffee.
According to CNN, Mabel Childress, who recently ordered coffee at a McDonald’s branch, claimed that she suffered burns because an employee gave her the drink without properly closing the lid. The plaintiff emphasized that he was suffering physically and emotionally due to the burns and that his requests for help from restaurant employees were rejected.
In response, the McDonald’s franchise owner denied some of the claims, saying, “We take all customer complaints seriously, and we reported Mr. Chaydris’ experience to management and provided assistance.” He said, “We are establishing protocols to ensure the safety of hot drinks, and we are also considering new legal claims.”
McDonald’s has been facing lawsuits over hot food for decades. According to CNN, McDonald’s paid $480,000 in compensation to a customer who suffered burns in 1992 after spilling hot coffee on his knee. At the time, the jury in the lawsuit agreed with the plaintiff’s claim that “the coffee was 30 to 40 degrees hotter than other companies’ coffee.” The first trial set a compensation of $3 million, but after an appeal, it was reportedly settled at $480,000.
McDonald’s was ordered to pay $800,000 in damages in the first trial in Florida this year in a lawsuit alleging that a baby was burned by a hot McNugget. The jury found that McDonald’s did not provide warnings or instructions about the harm that could be caused by hot McNuggets.
At the time, McDonald’s said it was an “unfortunate incident” but “we do not agree with the verdict.” The defense argued that there was no control over the injuries and damages.
