Former presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez publicly denounced on social media that Daniel Barreda Puga, father of Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) senator Daniel Barreda Pavón, was arrested. In the ordinary session of this Tuesday in the Senate, Senator José Clemente Castañeda also pointed out the arrest as a pressure measure, in the midst of the upcoming discussion of the reform of the Judicial Branch.
Senator Barreda Pavón’s vote is decisive for the debate in the Senate this Tuesday, when the reform of the Judicial Branch is planned to be voted on, said Máynez.
At the Senate session this morning, José Clemente Castañeda, a senator from the MC, said that both the senator and his father were arrested.
“We also have information that our colleague Senator Daniel Barreda has been detained by the governor of Campeche, Layda Sansores (…) Therefore, from Movimiento Ciudadano we demand that (Gerardo Fernández Noroña, president of the Senate Board of Directors) pause the session until we have full assurance that our colleague Senator Daniel Barreda is free,” Castañeda said.
Did Adan Augusto deny the arrest of MC Senator Daniel Barrera?
However, the information about the arrest of Senator Daniel Barrera and his father has been denied by Morena. Adán Augusto López, who is the coordinator of the Morena Party in the Senate, said that the Morena supporters are also concerned and worried about the senator’s absence and pointed out that the Morena governor, Layda Sansores, was available to review the files and rule out the alleged arrest of the MC senator and his father.
Furthermore, the senator and president of the Board of Directors, Noroña, has refused to consider a recess of the session until Barreda’s whereabouts are known.
In the Senate, Morena hopes that the first reading of the reform to the Judicial Branch can be given today, which has been strongly criticized by opposition legislators, but has also received criticism from the US ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, and other authorities, as well as from business organizations.
Meanwhile, PAN Senator Ricardo Anaya sent his “absolute solidarity” to Movimiento Ciudadano.
At noon, Fernández Noroña said that he had already had communication with Senator Daniel Barreda and that he had assured him that he was fine, along with his father.
“He told me they were in Mexico City,” and neither of them were arrested, Noroña said.
What did Layda Sansores say about the arrest of the MC senator in Campeche?
Campeche Governor Layda Sansores said it was “absolutely false” that Senator Daniel Barreda Pavón and his father were detained.
“Mr. Jorge Álvarez Máynez is irresponsible for having started this rumor without any basis,” he said on social media.
Senator Daniel Barreda Pavón and his father Daniel Barreda Puga held municipal positions during the municipal presidency of Campeche, also of the MC member Eliseo Fernández Montúfar who is a fugitive from justice and has been disqualified from holding public office for 20 years.
What did Senator Daniel Barreda say about judicial reform?
The senator of the Citizen Movement, Daniel Barreda Pavón, recently expressed his position regarding the judicial reform proposed by the ruling party Morena, which has been criticized by opposition groups such as the PAN, PRI and MC.
On September 5, Barreda stressed that he is interested in reforming the judicial system in Campeche, because “for two and a half years we have experienced political persecution” in the state, he said.
“Of course we need a reform, but we have to read it, we have to study it. It’s not just a matter of voting against it because some people are proposing it, or in favor because others are proposing it. I want to tell you that after having studied it and having read it (the judicial reform), my vote will be totally against it,” he said.
I want to share my position on the Judicial Reform, as well as denounce the abuses we have suffered in Campeche by the government of Layda Sansores.
MY VOTE IS AGAINST this reform that threatens the impartiality of justice and violates human rights. pic.twitter.com/UmP7Sa2Lze
