MC “Aphrodite”: Artificial intelligence will not replace the doctor – 2024-08-21 11:46:09

* Our big goal is to include Sofia in the list of the most developed cities in the world in the field of regenerative medicine, says Dr. Georgi Doichev

Over the past few decades, we have seen the rise of artificial intelligence, which has permeated all sectors, with investment pouring in from both private and public organizations.
Healthcare is becoming increasingly digitized, it’s only a matter of time before this technology becomes mainstream. When and how can this happen?

Many healthcare professionals are asking themselves the question, will artificial intelligence completely replace doctors? This is unlikely, at least in the near future, answers Dr. Georgi Doichev, director of the in vitro laboratory of the Aphrodite Medical Center and chief embryologist certified by ESHRE.

As the director of embryology at MC “Aphrodite”, he is the main “culprit” for the clinic’s excellent results. MC

“Aphrodite” is the largest center for regenerative medicine in Bulgaria. For the last 10 years, according to official data from the Center “Fund for Assisted Reproduction”, MC “Aphrodite” has been in the leading positions in terms of live births from in vitro procedures. The center has the highest success rate.

“We’re so far from general-purpose AI (artificial intelligence), let alone AI that could somehow replicate the care of a professional,” he says.

“I’ve been working in technology and healthcare for a long time, and there’s one thing I remain as convinced of now as I was when I started. Namely – nothing will take away the human touch, the healing hands and the emotional connection of the health specialists with the patients”, said Dr. Doichev categorically. Here is our conversation with him:

– Dr. Doichev, can AI (artificial intelligence) become useful for Bulgarian patients?

– I can tell you what we, Aphrodite Medical Center, have done in the field of reproductive medicine.
Every doctor has thousands of algorithms in their head that they know they need to check when treating a patient. If you can help by increasing that and actually sorting through all the flow that’s going on, then you’re definitely a step towards improving results.

Dr. Georgi Doychev

I think there is an understanding of the technology we use.
The application system of AI (artificial intelligence), involves the use of millions of databases to predict results, different from traditional methods, this is truly something unique.

One of the most important benefits that AI (artificial intelligence) will bring is the globalization of healthcare.
Bulgaria has access to world-class healthcare. But there are many jurisdictions where there is no medical expertise on site. Having an algorithm that can at least sort good quality material from bad (the problem of not having one) is very important.

Dr. Emil Filipov, Dr. Sasho Raikov and Dr. Georgi Doichev

With our partners at Genoma Italia we have access to over 3,000,000 different cases of families with reproductive problems, you can imagine what a help this is.

– Is it likely that artificial intelligence will do in medicine and do what the Internet has done in communication?

– The Internet is a great infrastructure that people sometimes use correctly and sometimes incorrectly and excessively. Likewise, AI will have a great ability to deliver incredible information, but you need safeguards.

Dr. Sasho Raykov, head of the “Invitro” department and Dr. Georgi Doichev, director of the invitro laboratory of MC “Aphrodite”

– What are the new goals of MC “Aphrodite”? For many years, your clinic has been in the leading positions in terms of the percentage of live births after in vitro procedures?

– Since the creation of MC “Aphrodite”, our cause has been to include Sofia in the list of the most developed cities in the world in the field of regenerative medicine. We are getting closer to that goal every day. The clinic is in collaboration with foreign partners from Great Britain, Italy and the USA, being at a fantastic level in all parameters. In addition, new personnel with international experience are recruited every year to support all of us, who have been with the clinic since its inception, follow global innovations and develop continuously.

Dr. Sasho Raykov, who has 16 years of experience in the field of reproductive medicine, has recently joined our team, 10 of which were in Spain – a leading country in the in vitro field. It will also contribute to our development. He is the head of the in vitro department of MC “Aphrodite

Aphrodite Medical Center has been at the forefront for the past 10 years, so the best is yet to come.
