The half million MBO students are in trouble due to the corona crisis, the MBO Council warns. Directors of the 63 MBO schools are concerned about the increasing internship shortages and about online education, which does not appear to be a good alternative for practical training, writes Faithful.
At home, students often lack the peace, space and silence to concentrate, says chairman Adnan Tekin NOS Radio 1 News. “And the heart of MBO education is learning in practice.”
There is a shortage of almost 21,000 internships and partly because the business community is struggling, that number is increasing. “We have a kind of marriage with the business community. If it goes well, our education will also go well. The reverse is also the case.”
Tekin believes that schools should come up with more creative ideas, such as manning a test street or turning vacant event locations. “But of course you are left with the one-and-a-half meter rule, that doesn’t make it any easier.”
In Trouw, professor of education policy Sjoerd Karsten (University of Amsterdam) endorses the concerns of the association of secondary vocational schools. “I also think that there is more danger of a loss of educational quality in MBO than in other education sectors.”
