At Konan High School in Kagoshima City, 308 students celebrated their graduation day. Many students attended without masks, except for some students who refrained from taking exams.
The graduates, who spent their three years in high school wearing masks, attended the graduation ceremony with a radiant expression. Also, unlike last year, there was no limit on the number of people, and many parents attended to watch over the children’s day of departure.
(Mr. Zoya Awaru, representative of the graduates) “I never put my desks together and ate lunch during my lunch break. What saved me at times was the smiles of my best friends who didn’t disappear even when they were blocked by masks.”
Graduates who took off their masks on the last day of high school. They took pictures with their friends and were reluctant to say goodbye, and burned each other’s faces into their memories.
(Graduate student) “There were some people I couldn’t recognize (the faces) from looking at the graduation album, but since they’re members who worked hard together for three years, I talked with people around me and took off the mask.”
(Graduate) “I thought my parents would like to see my face when I entered and exited, and I had to receive (a diploma) as a representative, so I took off my mask and put it on only when I sang the school song.”
According to the prefectural board of education, 9,454 students will graduate from public high schools in the prefecture this spring.
