The 34-year-old’s farewell was not as he had hoped after being sent in the shower already after half an hour played when PSG took the ball.
The St. Etienne captain went all in a duel with Kylian Mbappé before the break, but the PSG star was at least two tricks too quick for the 34-year-old.
He ended up taking the ankle of PSG’s perhaps biggest star, before he got the yellow card. Then the chaos broke out.
Almost all the players were involved in a single large basket attack near Mbappé, who was left writhing in pain after being injured by Perrin.
– Then there is a complete mass fight on the field. Now they have to calm down, said Viaplay commentator Paul Thomas Clay.
See the situation at the top of the case!
Get out on crutches
Chief Referee Amaury Delerue took a step back, before handing out yellow cards to Jessy Moulin, Romain Hamouna (both St. Etienne), Leandro Paredes and Michel Bakker (PSG).
Then the match manager went out on the sidelines to check the situation on video, and after also giving PSG substitute Marco Verratti the yellow card, he came on the field to show Perrin.
The veteran, who has been in St. Etienne all his career, was strongly influenced in the locker room in his last match for the club, while Mbappé followed out of the grass – he also influenced, but for completely different reasons after an injury that seemed to go ugly over the ankle of the star.
The injury is very bad news for PSG, who face Atalanta in the Champions League quarter-final on 12 August.
In the second half, the horror images came from the PSG fear, when Mbappé entered the grass on crutches, and with a solid padding on his right ankle.
Rowing ashore the victory
Before the red card, the capital team had taken the lead at Neymar, after preparation by Mbappé.
The latter was shot inside the box, but the finish was saved by St. Etienne goalkeeper Jessy Moulin.
The goalkeeper veteran had to return, however, and first on it was Neymar who thundered the ball into goal via the crossbar.
St. Etienne was dangerous up front on a couple of occasions after the break, but the Paris team finally secured a deserved and expected cup gold in France.
