Mbah Manto’s story of making an honest 24-hour petrol kiosk in Semarang, it turns out that many don’t pay

SEMARANG, KOMPAS.com – Sukarmnto (62) walked slowly across Silayur Street, Ngaliyan, Semarang City, Central Java.

He carried dozens of bottles of medium-sized bottled water to the side of the road. While watching the passing vehicles, he filled the dozens of bottles of fuel oil (BBM).

The bottles filled with gasoline were neatly arranged on a shelf that read “Kios Pertalite/Pertamax Honesty”.

Sukarmnto or who is familiarly called Mbah Manto, has been selling gasoline without being guarded for several years.

“So those who pay can directly put it in the white box,” explained Mbah Manto while showing the box that reads Rp. 10,000, Saturday (26/3/2022).

The reason Mbah Manto made the Honesty Kiosk was because it was a pity to see many motorists running out of fuel on Jalan Silayur.

“It’s a very uphill road here, while the gas station is also quite far. So I built this Honesty Kiosk,” he said.

The Honesty Kiosk that was created never closes. In a day, 40 liters of gasoline can be sold out at the kiosk.

“Most of it is at night, usually it’s quiet here at night. So many people who run out of gas come here. You know it’s all over in the morning,” he joked.

Making an Honesty Kiosk is not always profitable. Many buyers do not pay after taking gasoline.

“Yes, no problem, I really want to help. But sometimes, for example yesterday you didn’t pay, the next day you pay double. So suddenly there is Rp 50,000 in the box,” he added.

In addition to providing fuel, Mbah Minto also provides ice water and warm water complete with coffee. The drink was intentionally provided for the buyer.

“So most of the buyers are pushed, because many run out on the road. So I just provide drinks to quench my thirst for free,” he explained.

One of the buyers, Yunika Wulandari, admitted that she was helped by the Honesty Kiosk.

He admitted that he was confused because there was no one guarding the kiosk. Luckily, he continued, there were residents who informed him.

“I was confused about where to pay. It turned out that it was immediately put in the box,” he said.
