Mazda is among the most reliable car brands in the Rising Sun. The brand has a very ancient history and few know the modern origin of Mazda engines.
Mazda Motor Corporation was established in Fuchū, Aki, Hiroshima Prefecture. Japan is a land of engines with many high-profile brands. Mazda has managed to find its own space, among absolute queens such as Toyota, Nissan and many other realities. Mazda has grown a lot in the last 25 years, thanks to models that have also become popular in our latitudes.

The Japanese house, in 2007, it came to produce as many as 1.3 million cars for the world market, of which 1 million was made in the Hiroshima plants. The growth in the following years was even more impactful at a global level. In 2011, Mazda became the 18th largest automaker in the world, although it doesn’t have a structure comparable to its main Japanese competitors. But what made the Fuchū brand strong on a commercial level?
The more experienced will know the Wankel engine. The P360 Carol, equipped with a very small four-cylinder engine of only 358 cm3 with overhead camshaft, had very high construction costs. Mazda engineers designed the rotary engine in the 1970s. Thanks to the Wankel, the Japanese company also became competitive in Motorsport, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991 with the 787B with a quadcopter engine.
The very first car with this technological engine was the 1967 Cosmo Sports 110S. The car that drove the Americans crazy was the RX-7. More than 800 thousand copies were made. The engine was offered in two different versions: naturally aspirated or turbocharged. The latter variant reached up to 300 horsepower with “only” a 1.3 cm3. The RX-8 was the pinnacle of technology at the time, but the successor to the RX-7 was not as successful.
Where Mazda engines are produced today
A car that made sparks in Italy is the Mazda MX-5. In all its versions, the small coupé-cabriolet made millions of enthusiasts dream. Inspired by the British spiders, such as MG and Triumph, it represented a top economic choice for those who dreamed of having the wind in their hair. Over the course of the various generations, staggering numbers arrivedbecoming one of the best-selling sports cars in the world.

Other Mazdas that achieved outstanding sales results were the 626 and 929 sedans and the 121 and 323 small cars. The cars were original and very reliable, thanks to the spectacular rotary engines. This technology has defined many of Mazda’s cars, including the pickup trucks. The brand’s motto has become Defy Convention (“challenge conventions”), going in a different direction than other competitors.
The name Mazda originates, by assonance with the surname Matsuda of the founder, from Mazda, creator divinity of Mazdaism. And his engines? Mazda has two main factories in Japan (Hiroshima and Hofu) and other plants and research centers in the USA, China and Russia. The acronym PSA DV refers to a vast family of diesel engines, built starting in 2001, by a joint venture between the French group PSA (today Stellantis, after the merger with FCA) and Ford.
