Mazda MX-5: Facelifted Version with New Features and Updates

(Image: Mazda)

We were a bit shocked when we wrote this message about the Mazda MX-5, because we did not realize that the current generation on the market for almost nine years (!). is.

Let’s just say that the Mazda MX-5 ND, as the fourth generation is called, still looks young. That’s why Mazda has decided not to do much about the appearance.

Mazda MX-5 slightly facelifted

The facelifted MX-5 is barely recognizable as such. The layout of the headlights has been slightly changed by the designers and light units with a 3D effect have been mounted at the rear.

Officially, the changes only apply to the Japanese variant of the MX-5, but it won’t be long until the European version is also facelifted.

Brown interior, beige convertible top

A bit of a shame is that the grille now has a black piece of plastic on the left side (seen from the cockpit). Behind it is the radar sensor for the new adaptive cruise control with emergency braking function.

Mazda is also introducing an additional body color (Aero Gray), some other alloy wheels can be ordered and buyers can opt for an interior with brown upholstery. A beige hood is also new.

Remarkably, Mazda keeps the counters behind the wheel analogous. However, the MX-5 will soon be launched with a larger, 8.8-inch multimedia screen and a faster infotainment system.

Entry-level engine with an extra 4 hp

Are there any changes being made under the hood? Of course. The entry-level engine, a 1.5, gains 4 hp and now produces 136 hp. Nothing changes about the 2.0-liter. It is still good for 184 hp.

Mazda has also tinkered with the steering and gives all MX-5s with manual transmission a new limited slip differential and a DSC Track mode, in which the stability control allows more.

Mazda MX-5 electric?

By the way, the current MX-5 still has to last a while. Its successor will reportedly not come onto the market until 2026. It is known that it will be ‘electrified’, and it seems logical that it will have EV drive.
