Mazda CX-60 PHEV test: At first glance, a great buy, but some drivers lose their appetite after one ride

Worse than Toyota, better than Hyundai

I’m honestly glad that more and more automakers are using the same recipe for plug-in hybrids. The combination of a big atmospheric engine with electric doping just works better. Toyota (including its luxury brand Lexus), Ford and recently Mazda have proved this to the world. You don’t need a turbo, because at low revs, where petrol units lose momentum, electricity will help.

Unfortunately, in the new CX-60 model, the Japanese failed to fine-tune the system in such a way that it could pass the brilliantly driving Toyota RAV4 PHEV or Lexus NX 450h+. For example, the cooperation between the engine and the 8-speed gearbox did not always work smoothly, as there was sometimes a lag after pressing the accelerator. Like the car doesn’t know which drive to use. However, compared to the French or Korean “plugins”, the Mazda one worked better. Plus, he had an ace up his sleeve, and it was an amazing performance. Not once did we experience that the 327 horsepower under the hood wasn’t enough during an overtaking maneuver.

Disappointing for us was the fuel consumption and the relatively low electric range, which is sufficient for around 45-50 kilometers in real traffic conditions and autumn cold. Furthermore, after the batteries were discharged, the on-board computer recorded an average consumption in the city of around 11.4 l/100 km. You can find a detailed consumption test in the table.
