While the range of diesel engines is declining across the carmakers, Mazda attracts a whole new one. And straight six-cylinder. It will complement the plug-in hybrid in the new CX-60 model range.

When the first speculation about a large six-cylinder Mazda with rear-wheel drive appeared years ago, it sounded far too idealistic. All the more so today, when carmakers are announcing the final end of internal combustion engines and the accelerated transition to electromobility. But it wouldn’t be Mazda if she didn’t do things her way again.

And so it presents a brand new SUV CX-60, which has attracted us with several trailers in recent days. It is an interesting car in itself, the Japanese brand does not offer larger SUVs on the European market today (the CX-60 is 4.7 meters long). The novelty with a long hood and a cabin moved as far back as possible looks majestic. The interior is no less attractive in the first photos – with a huge digital instrument panel, but at the same time classic buttons for controlling basic functions. The materials are also pleasing to the eye, but we will find out more at the first personal meeting.

But now let’s get to the most interesting thing, which is undoubtedly a technique. Mazda recently announced a plug-in hybrid with over 300 horsepower. It works with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine we already know from models 6 and CX-5. The plug-in hybrid battery with a capacity of 17.8 kWh does not save anything from the 477-liter luggage compartment, as it fit under the seats. The car attracts with a system power of 241 kW and 500 newton meters of torque. It can handle up to 63 km purely on electricity.

But that’s not the end of it, the Japanese will also offer two six-cylinder engines! The first one burns gasoline and is a successor to the Skyactiv-X technology, which aims to combine the best of the world of petrol and diesel engines. However, Mazda will not offer this technology to European customers. However, they do not have to be too sorry, because they can look forward to an in-line six-cylinder diesel, which has a volume of 3.3 liters and cooperates with an eight-speed planetary automaton, in which the hydraulic converter replaces a multi-plate clutch. And beware, this car has rear-wheel drive as standard! The ATV can be ordered on request, for the plug-in hybrid it is standard. The novelty is to go on sale in June, the production will be provided by a domestic plant in Japan.
