Mazda comes with a six-cylinder diesel engine and rear-wheel drive!

Mazda defied the downsizing trend and comes with a full-fat six-cylinder diesel engine. And she added rear-wheel drive to it. We applaud for courage, for the chassis and for the engine!

We have written here more than once that Mazda is a somewhat unconventional manufacturer. After all, we recently published an article about the CX-60, which is exactly the car whose glorious moment is only now coming. Are you asking why? Because until now it was only available with a somewhat unsalted, low-fat four-cylinder mild hybrid. Nothing against hybrids, after all, the one from Mazda is economical and powerful at the same time. But we were looking forward to something else. A bit of rebellion. It is here. Read on, Elon buys anti-depressants in the meantime.

When against the current, then completely

Because the second engine announced is (fanfare please): a 3.3 liter straight six. Diesel. You might have to read it again to believe it. Yes, Mazda laughed at all the downsizing tendencies and came up with full-fat cream where others offer light yogurts. She deserves applause for this courage alone. The year is 2022, Brussels will soon ban us from selling gasoline lighters and we will return to flint.

And exactly until that time, Mazda will dare to come with a diesel, which is a slowly forbidden word in the upper floors of the administrative buildings of car companies, for the use of which there is a risk of deduction of premiums and disciplinary proceedings (honor to the bright exceptions, salute BMW). Moreover, with no small cubic capacity, but an “inline six” with a volume of 3.3 liters. Just in case someone wondered if they had made a mistake at Mazda and made “diesel” by mistake. No, they didn’t. You wanted a bomb, here it is.

Powers of adequate volume and number of cylinders

And “bomb” it really is. Of the already mentioned 3.3 liters, the six-cylinder combined with the 48V mild hybrid will offer 187 kW and 550 Nm, the version without the mild hybrid will have 147 kW. Hybrid uses new e-Skyactive D technology and “to 100” is not too dazzling 7.4 seconds. We’d chalk it up to the gearing and the weight, this really isn’t a Miata MX-5. Both versions transmit power to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic, while the mild hybrid is understandably a “four-wheel drive” with the i-Activ AWD system.

Perhaps the “classic” diesel without hybrid technology remains more interesting. Which, on the one hand, will be closer to us with “smaller electrification”, and on the other hand, it is delivered in the basic version – with rear-wheel drive! Let’s sum it up: what we have here is a big, spacious car that looks like a classic SUV, hides a six-cylinder diesel jewel under the hood and lets you feel the lightness of the front wheels without any drive in every corner. That doesn’t sound bad at all for 2022, what do you say, Elon?
