Some time ago, the Japanese carmaker pleased us with engine news with a good number of cylinders and volume. He now admits that another similar surprise is unlikely.

While most car manufacturers are backing away from high-volume engines with five or more cylinders and prefer downsizing, Mazda has once again set out on its own path. And so for SUV CX-60 (and other models that will follow) has prepared a brand new in-line six-cylinder – three-liter Sky-X burning gasoline and 3.3-liter turbodiesel.

It could be assumed that even this great news will have a few but. A completely new platform with six-cylinder and rear-wheel drive would suit not only the spacious SUV but also the traditional Mazda 6. But there has recently been information that the new “six” is not included in the brand’s future plans, successor.
Joachim Kunz, Head of Technical Development at Mazda Europe Research and Development Center, has now spoken about the new six-cylinder engines in an interview with Automotive News Europe. And he revealed that we would hardly see anything similarly magnificent. “Most likely it will be the latest generation of internal combustion engines,” stated on the topic of motor news.
This might not be as scary a message as it might seem at first. The six-cylinder engines themselves (unless there is a general ban on internal combustion engines) with various modifications can serve under the hoods of many models for many years. This is also confirmed by Kunz, who says that the carmaker is ready to adapt its new units to the stricter Euro 7 emission standard – so it is decided exactly what the engines should actually meet.

The Japanese keep the technical parameters of the Sky-X engine to themselves, so far they have only shared more detailed information about the turbodiesel. The six-cylinder Sky-D comes in two versions – the weaker one has an output of 170 kW (231 hp) and a torque of 500 newton meters. The more powerful is equipped with a mild-hybrid system and mines even more, namely 187 kW (254 hp) and 550 Nm of torque. In any case, we wish all versions a rich and longest possible life!
