Mazatlán stays alive after beating DC United and Santos says goodbye to the Leagues Cup | TUDN Leagues Cup

Mazatlán continues to respond in the Leagues Cup after beating DC United 2-1 to qualify for the Round of 16

The Liga MX team was the one that had the initiative for most of the game and even more so when Jared Stroud was sent off for an assault that left the MLS team with one less man in the 27th minute.

The score was opened in the 33rd minute by Édgar Bárcenas who fired a shot from outside the area and the second goal came two minutes before the end of the first half thanks to a header by Brian Rubio who entered the area unmarked to extend Mazatlán’s lead.

In the second half, the Gunners had the best chances against a DC United that did not show much danger, however, in a careless moment, the American team discounted with a goal by Mateusz Klich in the 74th minute.

Mazatlán woke up after DC United’s goal and began to create danger on the goal defended by Alex Bono.

Despite playing with one more player, in the last minutes of the match DC United almost tied the game, but thanks to the good performance of goalkeeper Ricardo Gutiérrez they won and earned a ticket to the Round of 16, where they will face Cruz Azul.

Santos Laguna was unable to beat Cincinnati after losing in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the 90 minutes that eliminated them from the Leagues Cup.

The team from Laguna took the lead in the match after a defensive error that Antony ‘Choco’ Lozano took advantage of to make it 1-0 with barely five minutes of the match played.

Cincinnati reacted quickly and at 10′ Luca Orellano showed off with a goal into the corner that Carlos Acevedo was unable to stop.

After the tie, the MLS team took the ball, but could not score the second due to the great interventions of Acevedo who was a wall.

In the second half, Cincinnati remained superior to Santos, although it was not reflected on the scoreboard and the match was decided from the penalty spot.

In the penalty shootout, Cincinnati and Santos were effective and did not fail, but at the death Aldo López, a player from Laguna, missed his shot and the MLS team secured their place in the next round.
