Mayors of the Region do a common front against Abanca before him mass closure of branches, especially in rural areas. It is the case of Poio o de Campo Lameiro which also joins Abanca’s black list. In it are Soutelo de Montes (Forcarei), Carballedo (Cerdedo-Cotobade), Seixo (Marín), Campelo (Poio), Carril and Vilaxoán (Vilagarcía de Arousa), locations where branch closures have already closed or are announced.
The President of the Xunta in Pontevedra spoke about this controversy this morning, after the act of tribute to the Olympic athletes.
Núñez Feijóo regretted these branch closures for which he blamed the Central Government for not passing a law that prevents it; and announced that the Xunta will help the affected councils so that they can at least have ATMs.
For its part, the mayors affected they have maintained contacts in the last hours to take joint measures. Some of them they propose a boycott of this entity, threatening with withdraw the money from the councils deposited in them, and asking the population to do the same, so that the closures have a high economic cost for Abanca. The last case is that of Campo Lameiro. Abanca announced yesterday the closing of the branch for September 8, which has already motivated the frontal rejection of its mayor Carlos Costa, of the PP.
The regidor called a Urgent Spokesperson’s Board and announces an extraordinary plenary session to take measures, including mobilizations.
The mayor, after meeting with local businessmen, does not hide his indignation with Abanca’s decision, which he describes as “unprecedented aggression against rural people,” especially in this case, since this branch is the only one that exists in Campo Lameiro.
The popular regidor manifested on Radio Pontevedra that the closure of the same will affect “very serious to the municipality, especially the elderly who will have to travel to other municipalities in order to withdraw the money from their pensions”.
Recall that yesterday the Poio corporation also decided to take action before the closure of the Abanca de Campelo branch.
The Board of Spokespersons decided yesterday to request a meeting with the territorial authorities of the entity, to demand that all the branches in Poio remain operational, in addition to requesting the installation of an ATM in Raxó.
For his part, the mayor of Cerdedo-Cotobade, Jorge Cubela, also affected by the closures of Abanca, facilitated through Social Networks his support for the mayor of Campo Lameiro. Cubela expressed his rejection of branch closures, considering that it is an attack against rural Galicia, while calling for “political unity among all mayors to make a common front.”
Also the mayor of Pontevedra joins the criticism against Abanca. Fernández Lores assures that branch closures are also taking place in cities, although they are less traumatic than rural ones. The nationalist alderman recalls that banking is a public service and that for this reason, branch closures should not be allowed to follow only an economic criterion.
